Northgate Lighting's Charity of the Year, Children's Heart Surgery Fund

This year, Northgate Lighting is supporting local charity, Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), after choosing them as our Charity of the Year.

Northgate Lighting will be holding fundraising events throughout the year to raise money for CHSF which supports the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit. The Unit treats babies, children and adults with congenital heart disease across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Based near the Leeds Children’s Hospital, CHSF supports the 450 babies, children and adults requiring open heart surgery every year, plus more than 17,500 people of all ages with congenital heart disease who annually visit the hospital as outpatients. The charity pays for vital medical equipment, resources for the unit, staff training, family accommodation and support, and research.

CHSF is wholly self-funded, and aims to ensure these patients have the best possible care and to help their families in whatever way needed during their stay in hospital.

Danny’s Story

One of our Team Leaders, Danny, inspired us to choose CHSF as our Charity of the Year by sharing his own story. Danny’s daughter, Imogen, needed surgery as a newborn. Imogen had full open heart surgery at just 8 days old for her condition, Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), as well as having 3 VSDs closed up (holes in the heart).

During this very difficult time, Danny and his family were supported throughout by this fantastic charity and they cannot speak highly enough of them. CHSF not only provided emotional support, but also accommodation for the family to stay nearby. Imogen is now a beautiful, bubbly two-year-old!

"We are delighted to support Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, especially as it’s a fantastic local charity that is close to our hearts at Northgate Lighting. Everyone is already looking forward to doing as much as we can to help."

Fundraising for CHSF

As well as supporting the families throughout the journey to surgery and recovery, CHSF gives each child a Katie Bear (the charity’s mascot) teddy, certificateand medal to honour their bravery. The full-sized Katie Bear is often seen at fundraising events, and sometimes visits the patients, offering some light relief for children awaiting surgery.

Your donations will go towards caring for the heart, the mind, the family and the future of congenital heart disease patients in our region. Just like Imogen, these patients and their families will be given exceptional care as a result of fundraising from people like you.

Your generosity can really mean the world to babies, children and adults with congenital heart disease across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. Whatever you can give will make a huge difference!

As well as fundraising events, we will be co-ordinating visits to the hospital where possible, and raising funds at the office.

We’ll update you here, but you can also check our fundraising page and donate any time on our JustGiving page.

"We are hugely grateful Northgate Lighting have chosen us as their charity of the year – without local business support like this we would struggle to make such a difference. Together we can support hearts for life."
